Prayer Meditation

Prayer Meditation

What is Meditation?

Meditation is mental exercise for the spirit and the mind. We're all faced with stresses, and how we respond to those stresses can actually enhance our spiritual life.

Meditation can be an oasis of peace and tranquility for you-no matter what chaos is going on around you. Meditation and especially meditation prayer can help provide you with a healthier outlook, a healthier body, calmer feelings inside and out, a powerful immune system and lots and lots of joy.

When Meditation is new

Does the word Meditation alone cause you anxiety? Does the concept of trying to calm your mind seem like it will take too much time and energy and not worth it? Here are a few words of wisdom to take to heart:

If you haven't worked out in months or years, would you expect your body to function at it's best right away? Be so kind and gentle to your mind as you are to your body. If meditation is new to you, it will take some time to get the hang of it. the benefits out-weigh the effort.

Most of us have never taken formal classes in meditation. You don't have to do it alone. If you have problems, seek out classes, read books, listen to books on tape or recorded meditation classes, or watch DVDs/videos for some support.

Be kind to yourself and know that you are right where you are supposed to be. It's all good. Beads can help, because the touching beads can help you to reach that meditative state easier.

About Meditation

There are many different types of meditation, and choosing the best one for you depends on your interests, beliefs and what seems to fit you best. There is no set formula for this-it is totally up to you. I'll cover some of the more common types, but there is nothing to say that you can't compare and contrast and even combine. Remember, the key is that it works for you. Some cultures honor meditation as common-place. There is a lot of mystery surrounding the practice, and I hope to clear up some misconceptions and questions. I, too, had lots of questions.

Prayer is very meditative to some people, and by definition, it should be.

Meditation prayer involves meditation. How much do you know about meditation?

Meditation Prayer

No matter what kind of meditation you practice, you will undoubtably focus your attention to avoid letting your thoughts ramble along and around. Most of us feel this way a lot of the time, and this is why prayer meditation is so very helpful to us. True prayer meditation can be a challenge, also. It is difficult to learn how to not pay attention to our thoughts. This concentrated thought is a key to consciousness. We want focused thoughts instead of random, chaotic thoughts.

There are tricks to the trade of focusing thoughts. Sounds such as the mantra (repeated word over and over)can enhance your prayer life. For instance, you might repeat a word that has some meaning to you such as joy, peace, love and so on. It might help to focus on an object or candle flame in order to help focus your attention. Centering the heart and mind IS the key to prayer meditation.

Mindfulness Walk

I've often referred to my evening or morning walk as my 'sanity walk,' I could probably use more of them. There is more to those walks than just sanity though. Prayer Walking is so much more.

Prayer Walking is an wonderful way to integrate prayer and exercise. Do you want to learn more?

Can Yoga be Prayerful?

Yoga has become a fairly common 'physical' exercise for those of us in the United States. However, yoga is a lot more than just physical. If you see yoga as primarily a physical exercise, that's okay, because you still reap the benefits of relaxation and meditation even if you are not really aware of it.
There are many different kinds of yoga.

Karma yoga is the yoga of action and emphasizes service to others.

Bhakti yoga is the yoga of devotion and love of God.

Jnana yoga is the yoga of knowledge and emphasizes the intellect and striving.

Raja Yoga is considered the 'highest' form of yoga, and its primary purpose is to help manage the thought process and convert that physical and mental energy we have into spiritual energy. Meditation is a key part of this type of yoga.

Hatha yoga is a part of Raja Yoga. It incorporates yoga postures, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. It requires balance through mental and physical exercises.

More on the Relationship between Prayer and Meditation

Christians and Hebrews use the word 'prayer' more than meditation.
