Who is Reuben Archer Torrey (1856-1928)? He was an American evangelist, pastor, educator and writer. He was born in New Jersey on January 28, 1856. He was highly educated having graduated from Yale Univeristy in 1875 and Yale divinity School in 1878. In 1898, Torrey served as a chaplain with the YMCA at Camp Chicamauga during the Spanish-American War. Later, during World War II, He performed similar service at Camp Bowie (a POW camp in Texas) and Camp Kearny during the Spanish-American War. He had the honor of preaching in nearly every part of the English-speaking world during the years of 1902-1903. He served as Dean of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles in 1912 and also served as pastor of the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles.
He died at home in Asheville, North Carolina on October 26, 1928. He left a legacy of having preached the world over and penning over forty books. He was married to Clara Smith and they had five children.
