Journal Ideas

Are you ready to start your journal, but still not quite sure where to begin? That's okay. I know what that is like. I know of some fun ways to start, though.

Let's start by thinking about some of those basic spiritual needs. Some spiritual needs are to be loved, humor, connectedness, and belief in something greater than ourselves. there are more, so be sure and take a look. I like to review them once in a while because I find that I'm sometimes so far off course that I don't even realize it anymore. Can you relate?

Knowing yourself and living according to your values is a part of spiritual well being (having those spiritual needs met). We get a little or a lot bogged down sometimes because we find ourselves in circumstances that don't feel right for us because we follow the ebb and flow of life without really feeling. It is much easier to sleep through life then to contemplate. It is even more difficult to follow the guidance or intuition we get. Afterall, if, for instance, you live in a big luxurious home that you worked very hard for and yet you find yourself driven to live a simple, uncomplicated life in the mountains, would it be difficult to change everything? For many of us, it would. Perhaps the feeling of knowing you are living true to yourself would be enough.

So, how can you explore who you really are? What do you value-really value? This means you've got to let go of what others think, unless, of course you value what others think more than you value youself.

  • Begin by spending as much time as you need to reach a relaxed state. You might go for a prayer walk, pick up those prayer beads, sit in quiet meditation, do some imagery or whatever you like.
  • List the numbers 1-20 on paper. You can list more if you want, and this is a good idea. Write the words 'I am' or 'I want,' or any other words that feel right to you. Without really thinking, just start writing.
Examples: I am 50 I am a writer I am lonely

  • Keep going. Be careful to avoid editing-whatever you write is supposed to be there. Editing won't really be true. The idea is to get to a meditative state and allow the words to flow from somewhere other than just your thinking brain. I know that sounds a little 'out there' but you'll see what I mean when you try this.
  • When you are done, take a look at what you have written. How many of the items are about your body, your faith, your emotions, your talents...
  • Now, journal about what you learned about yourself!

This is just one little trick to get the creative juices flowing.

More Journal Ideas

Sometimes I like to just write absolutely whatever comes to my mind, and I make a point to just try to write 1-2 words at a time. It is amazing what flows from my heart to the paper. Start with one word. What does that word make you think about? Keep going! Pretty soon you won't be 'thinking' about it at all. This is one way to brainstorm.

You can take the brainstorming idea and rather than listing the words that come to your heart, write them on the paper wherever you want to. Try a bigger peice of paper, colored paper or colored ink to be really creative. Once you look your creation over, you might find connections. If you want, draw in arrows and circles to connect the ideas.

Remember, this is where your intuition comes in. When you stop thinking, you'll be able to hear what God has to say to you.
