Keeping Your Cool 6 Steps for Chaotic Times
Uncertain times call for certain responses.
Keeping Your Cool
Notice I used the word 'responses' and not 'reactions?' When I think of a 'reaction', I think of knee jerk, emotional type behaviors. When I think of a 'response', I think of something a bit more thought out. Anticipation goes a long, long way. In my work right now, people are sick and scared about the prospect of having 'swine flu.' Bad manners, rude verbal attacks and even demanding behavior from people who have waited for their healthcare happens. It seems to be happening more lately than ever before. Okay, so when I've already worked 10 or more hours without even much of a bathroom break, my initial response to someone telling me off is to give it right back. I am human, and don't we want to defend ourselves. What would happen if I fired right back in defense? I would probably get fired right back at and things would really heat up.
So, I prepare and try to take care of myself so I can respond and not react.

Some of My Thoughts About Keeping Cool Amist the Choas
#1. People are good deep down, but scared and sick today. It isn't personal. #2. Remember to breath, stay calm and focus on trying to acknowledge their situation. (I understand that you aren't feeling well, and you just waited so long while I took care of the other sick people. Let's see what we can do to help you to feel better.) #3. Focus on the results of the visit, not the attacks coming my way. I try to see every person as if they were a family member who I would want the best for. #4. Grab onto those prayer beads and think of the big picture. (Help me to be a vessel of love; help me to be a channel of all things good; help me to stay cool; PS: I'ld like to have time for lunch and a quick bathroom break, too! (<: ) #5. Give the gift of presence by listening with eye contact. #6. If I'm not able to get past the drama or if I consider it 'abusive,' I calmly say the following,' I am not able to take care of your health needs at this time. I ask that you leave, and return when you are able to talk to me in a respectful way.' Thankfully, I haven't had to say anything of the sort for a long time. You've got to love yourself, too. Being a good person doesn't mean you let people run over you. I'm sure you've got your own 'chaos' to deal with. Keeping Your Cool is a great Goal!
