Labyrinth and Health
Is Walking a Labyrinth Good for Your Health?
Is walking a labyrinth good for your health?
The short answer is YES!
A labyrinth is a path that follows a single directiona nd can be either spiraling concentric circles or another looping pattern of some kind. Labyrinth walking is a form of meditation-a moving meditation or walking meditation. It can bring about a feeling of peace, wellbeing and help you to become stress-resistant.
Labyrinth=Maze?
Laybrinth and Health
Well, if you got lost walking around a maze, this probably wouldn't promote stress reduction, peace or any of the other benefits of a labyrinth. It might be fun for awhile, but...
A labyrinth is not a maze at all. It kind of looks the same, but in fact a labyrinth follows a path with no trick dead-ends or anything. Labyrinths can be inside a church or cathedral, outdoors and might be defined by shrubs or stones. The labyrinth path I recently walked was defined by stones. One was inside and one was outside. They were both beautiful!

You May Find Answers!
The answers aren't hidden away in the shrubs or along the path-they're inside. Sometimes (okay, most times or all times) we just have to be quiet in order for the answers to come to us. If you believe, as I do, that the answer is also inside you, you just need to quiet the mind chatter in order to hear. Various cultures and traditions have used labyrinth and spiral designs as symbols of mysticism and the search for meaning and guidance. They aren't attached to any particular religion, although some believe that walking a labyrinth can help to connect to a higher power.
Consider the labyrinth a metaphor for life. In fact, when I visited with Eve at the Sacred Garden of Maliko, Maui, Hawaii, she talked about the symbolism of weddings and procession when conducting weddings in the labyrinth. What a beautiful idea!

Want to Reap the Labyrinth Health Benefits?
Well, the first step is exactly THAT: Take a step! Walk at your own pace, and proceed toward the center. You can't get lost-just follow the path. When you reach the center, do what comes natural for you. You can rest, pray, sit or taking nice slow deep breaths.
Then, take those steps again and meander back out the same path you entered.
This walk might take 15 minutes or an hour. There are no rules and you can just take your time. The journey, just like life, is your journey.
The more you have this wonderful experience, the more benefits you'll experience.
Stress and What Happens to Your Body
There was a time that we knew stress was harmful, but we didn't realize just HOW harmful and just how the harm is done long term. We do now, and in fact it is estimated that close to 90% of illnesses are stress-related.
Don't be a victim!
