Prayer and the Flu
Prayer and the Flu
Well, the flu season is upon us. Actually, as someone who works in a busy clinic, I can tell you that the flu season has been going on. There is a lot of anxiety out there about the seasonal flu, H1N1 flu, also known as swine flu and what we can do about it.
When people ask me what they can do to avoid getting sick, I give them some guidance on how to stay healthy. Afterall, the best defense is to be as healthy as you can so your body can fight off any unwanted visitors-such as viruses.
I've written quite a bit about the flu and colds and so on on naturally-holistic.net, and I'm sure I'll be updating it as the season goes on. The center for disease control has the latest and the greatest. Be sure and visit there, too.
So, my friends-let's get healthy!
1. Drink plenty of water. Remember you can also find water in fruits, vegetables, soups and so on.
2. Get plenty of Rest. It is essential for our bodies to get sleep-rejuvinate and refresh. This isn't just lip service- SLEEP is a requirement.
3. Eat a healthy diet. If you aren't sure where to begin, start right here. Most of us have to work at this this, so if you feel like it is a lot of work, you are right. Eating junk is easy. No supplement can make up for healthy eating. If you can't eat right, take your vitamins. I'm so busy in our little clinic that sometimes I barely make it to the bathroom, much less take time to eat stress free. I do try to make up for it the next day and try to watch my stress level.
4. Take time to pray. Prayer can help us become stress resistant and tolerant of life's ups and downs. There are so many more reasons to pray and so many ways to pray! Prayer is part of a healthy life.
5. Carry your prayer beads with you. I do this so that I can just reach into my pocket when things get tense-AND they do get tense!
6. Try to stay as stress resistant as possible. There is always stress, but how you address is it will make the difference.
7. Remember those 'unwanted visitors' I mentioned earlier. Avoid them!
Wash your Hands often. Try singing Mary Had a Little Lamb (outloud or in your head) when you wash your hands to be sure you wash for long enough.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as these are ways those viruses can find their way in
If you cough or sneeze, try to do so into your elbow or sleeve rather than letting them fly into the air.
Avoid people who are sick, if you can help it. Viruses like the flu bugs are easily shared.
If you get sick, (fever, body aches, cough...) stay home. Please don't share with others. You could save someone's life.
The flu is terrible, but for people with other health conditions it can be deadly. Take care of your own health and respect the health of others. There is no need to panic, but it is important to be wide aware.
